Not
just one but two years have flashed past without putting our activities
on paper. In January 2007 Kerry joined David in Sydney, started a
new job and a new life, back in her home town. We lived in a flat
in Top Ryde until they put the rent up, then moved to West Ryde until
the owner said she wanted to move in ( she didn’t). So last
December we bought a three bedroom unit in Meadowbank and have lived
there happily for 12 months. It is very close to David’s
work and convenient for Kerry – she catches the train into the
city.
David works as an Applications Engineer for a company which sells power
quality and fault location equipment all around the world. Their office
and factory is in Meadowbank, and it takes him less than 3 minutes to
cycle to work via the direct route. As he likes cycling, David normally
takes a much longer route, and also often rides at lunch time and after
work, as well as doing a 50 km ride around Bicentennial Park and
Parramatta River on Sunday mornings. In the past two years he has
maintained an average of at least 10 km of bike riding per day, at an
average speed of 20 kph. Kerry also has a new bike, so she often joins
David for coffee after cycling on Sunday mornings.

Most of 2007 seemed to be taken up with new jobs, moving flats and
fixing the Traveller, which got rear ended by a truck in February 2007
and which took till October 2007 to repair. Then we bought our
Meadowbank apartment in late December 2007, moved in just before Xmas,
and returned from holidays in Tasmania to find that the fridge had
failed – what a stink that nice warm Sydney weather made!!
Kerry’s work takes her all over the eastern seaboard,
interviewing applicants with dust diseases. In August this year
she was made permanent. There is never a dull moment at the
DDB! And 2009 promises more upheavals and restructurings.
She managed to break her arm in a fall in May and caught a nasty cough
(called the 100 day cough in Sydney) in August, otherwise all is as
normal. Apart from work, we have our cycling friends, the
knitting guild, trips to the cinema, theatre and concert hall and a
regular round of parties, dinners and visits with friends and
relations. Two family weddings this year were a real treat.

The highlight of this year was our trip around the world in June and
July 2009. It was great to catch up with friends and the canal trip in
France was unforgettable. Ripe figs, two euro wine, and fresh
local seafood, absolute luxury. Tempting promises of three weeks
spinning in the Pyrenees next year to entice us back, flow through the
email ether….
When we came back,
David purchased a new car – an automatic Renault Kangoo van. It is only a two
seater, but now has an extra rear seat (removable) for when we need it. It has
plenty of room in the back, so we can fit two cycles in without having to
dismantle anything at all. It is also very convenient for moving furniture and
other bulky items.
Alex, Alicia, Laura and Sean are well and enjoying life in Leslie
Vale. Alex is teaching part time at Margate and Alicia is doing
well in her nursing studies. Alex has built a great cubby house
and their garden grows, just like the children.

Christopher is working at a restaurant in Bellerive and is planning on
a university bridging course next year so that he can do a teaching
course after that. He still loves his surfing. He now has a
quad bike and a motor boat to get him to the best spots, but uses
Qantas for the Indonesian trips
Phillipa worked last year for a law firm in Devonport, but decided to
leave for greener pastures. At present she is awaiting news from
several promising job applications, some of which may return her to
Tasmania after her holiday on the eastern seaboard, hopefully before
the basketball seasons starts again. We have enjoyed her frequent
visits this year.

Victoria
and Chris Clarke celebrated their engagement in January 2008 and all is
ready for their wedding on 3 January 2009. They have moved into their
North Strathfield home, only 8 km from us. Chris is stationed at
Garden Island. Victoria graduated with First Class Honours in Science
(Biotechnology) and has won a scholarship to do her PhD at the
University of Sydney. We are delighted at her success and expect to
see a Nobel Prize any time soon.

Christmas
2008 finds us in Hobart with most of the family, including Kerry’s
father Noel, visiting. We will be at home to visitors for the week 21
to 27 December, so please call us if you are in Hobart then. We will
be enjoying a few days at the shack until we head for Burnie and all
the ceremonies attending the wedding. Then back on the boat and a
leisurely trip to Sydney in the Traveller.
